Lingfield Park racecourse referred to as ‘racing’s most elegant course’ is situated in a beautiful part of Surrey bordering Sussex and Kent, nestling in a magnificent gentle valley that has been used for recreation since the 15th century. The racecourse is set in a fabulous expanse of 450 acres that was officially opened as a racecourse in 1890 by the Prince of Wales who was later crowned George VII. For the first four years only jump racing took place but flat racing was added in 1894 and drew many visitors with the newly established railway link facilitating travel to the area.
Today Lingfield Park is owned by the Arena Racing Company and is one of only four racecourses in the UK to have an all-weather course. The ‘polytrack’ surface was completed in 2001 and was an immediate success with horse owners, trainers and jockeys who could now enjoy the comfort and safety of an all-weather surface and year round racing. Lingfield Park Racecourse has a very busy racing schedule with many weekday meetings as well as weekend meetings held throughout the year making for a vibrant atmosphere and constant activity.
The first Derby Trial Stakes and the Oaks Trial were run in 1932 and are amongst the most prestigious races hosted every year in the month of May. Lingfield Park was the very first racecourse to be incorporated into a leisure centre with golf course, luxury hotel and Spa offering visitors the spectacular view of the racetrack from the hotel windows. Fabulous visitors facilities have been built along with a magnificent grandstand and many non-equestrian events take place throughout the year at this beautiful racecourse.
There are several racedays that are combined with musical entertainment under the title of Racing and Music Nights making this a fabulous destination for people looking for something completely different. The owners of Lingfield Park racecourse have recently invested hugely in the stables and staff lodge at the park along with vastly improved visitors’ facilities that include award winning restaurants attracting a great mix of visitors to this unique recreational complex.
